As a Civics teacher I believe it is imperative to give students numerous opportunities to apply our course material beyond the classroom. As a result, I also sponsor our Student Council and the Model United Nations team. These endeavors both in the classroom and beyond require an extensive amount of student travel which leads to a disproportionate amount of my time and focus dedicated to fund raising. As a result we often take students to the state capitol and to overnight conferences for Model U.N. and Student Council Leadership Development. We have been able to visit numerous college campuses and have many amazing experiences building a culture of student voice and leadership that is passed on from class to class. This year our students have been invited to the National High School Model United Nations in New York; and we are also sending a record number of students to the Model United Nations at Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, IL. Despite extensive fundraising efforts we are still falling short of our goal. Additionally, Student Council will be attending the Illinois Association of Student Councils State Conference in Springfield, IL. These experiences, as amazing as they are for our students, require transportation and accommodations costing thousands of dollars. We also have an increasing demand among our students for our annual student lobbying day at the state capitol. This means more buses and more lunches. While these experiences are trans-formative for our under-served school community, our families often cannot afford to just pay for it; and I have never been one to let economic inequity prevent a student from participating. If we are able to raise enough funds, not only will we fulfill our travel needs for this school year, we will also further develop a summer leadership training conference for emerging student leaders in our community.
