In order to teach empathy, compassion and understanding, it is important for students to read books that allow them to see outside their own lives and recognize the humanity of other people. Being a diverse school, I want the books in my classroom to be both reflective of my students and a window into how others live. I hope that in purchasing culturally diverse books, I can help students build connections to themselves and those around them.
