I started teaching in 2015 and am in my 5th year at Key Elementary. I am incredibly lucky because I went to Key (1985-1991). My mother worked at Key for 23 years and so even after I left Key, I still was able to come back and visit my past teachers. When I started teaching, I was able to teach alongside some of the teachers that I had, and that had inspired me to become a teacher. I still see some of my teachers and am proud to show them the work that I now do. I find that many of my students are the children of my friends and people that I grew up knowing. I truly mean it when I call my students, "my kids" and the community that makes up Key, "my family". Not many people can say they have over 400 people in their family and that they get to see them almost every day! In a world of black and white views, testing and only one right answer, I am able to introduce and open up a world of outside the box thinking, process over product and a million different ways to get to a million different answers. Exploration, risk taking, and discovery through art gives my kids confidence, creativity, and independence. These qualities are so important in navigating our world.
Art is a place for children to learn to trust their ideas, themselves, and to explore what is possible. - Maryann F. Kohl”

What will the funds be used for
I teach art at the elementary level. I have a school budget that goes mainly to purchasing perishables (pencils, paper, paint, glue, etc.) and I never have enough to go to those things that help make a classroom a home for my students. I see about 100 students a day and have over 400 students in total. I would love for my students to come into my classroom and explore and create without boundaries, without me telling them "no, we have to save those materials for projects", and without me worrying about how I'm going to make it through the year on a limited budget. I love showing the kids how art surrounds them and how they can experience art in everything they encounter!
