Years of experience
Students this year
I teach in an inner city school that uses books for our ELA class that come in pieces. These books are so old they are no longer bound together but have fallen apart. We have books donated to our building but too often they are of characters and situations that the students can not relate to. For struggling readers this is very difficult and u fortunately the majority of my kids are struggling readers. They struggle because they are not afforded the opportunity to embrace reading; it is more of a chore for them. It is my mission to show children that reading can be fun and enjoyable!!
How will funding help my students?
I spend most of my money on books and flexible seating in order to encourage kids to read. Kids HATE reading because they are required to read books that either a. Don’t interest them or b. Have to do with characters they don’t identify with. But with a comfortable bean bag chair ( instead of a hard rigid desk) a kid can lose themselves in one of the new contemporary books that I buy ( which are expensive unfortunately) it is such an inspiring thing to see them come to the conclusion that reading can be fun and that they, in fact, do not hate reading!!! This in turn leads to better academics and more importantly well rounded perspectives for our younger generations.
