Eight years ago I had my heard about this program called Cookshop that is funded and ran by the Foodbank of New York. My principal at the time though it was a great idea and he agreed to enroll our school. I took the role as site coordinator. My job was to order all the food for the 12 classes involved, ensure the paperwork was completed by my colleagues and distribute the food to the classes once it is delivered.

The Foodbank of NY feels it is important to provide children with the knowledge and tools to adopt and enjoy a nutritious diet and active lifestyle on a limited budget. Through interactive lessons and workshops, CookShop fosters enthusiasm for and consumption of fresh, affordable fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and low-fat or fat-free dairy products, and promotes water consumption over sugar-sweetened beverages and an active lifestyle for all members of the family.

This program is amazing and it works. I would see students making better snack choices. Students are eating and preparing foods such as “Peachy Orange Salsa” and 3 Bean Fiesta Salad. All recipes do not require any cooking, just chopping and stirring. The students not only become knowledgeable in healthy eating habits but they also increase their abilities in sequencing, collaboration with others, following directions and basic food preparation.

Unfortunately, Cookshop just notified me they lost 75%n of their funding and they have to drop our school. This breaks my heart because I have seen the effect this program has on my organization and I just want it see it continue. We have all the curriculum and all the equipment. However we need funding for the food, in order to have the all 12 classes participate it will cost $3750.00

Good better best Never let it rest, until your good is better And your better is best!!”

What will the funds be used for

The money will be used to purchase all the supplies and food needed for 12 classes. Each class needs disposable items such as bowls, cups, forks, knives and flexible cutting mats. Each class also needs cleaning supplies such as cleaning spray, dish soap and sponges. Each class also needs the basics such as salt, pepper, olive oil and honey. There are 2 lessons per unit that food is required. There's 6 discovery lessons where we taste and explore the food group. There's 6 chef lessons where we prepare a recipe.
