1. Involve your students in your procedures

There are a lot of ways that students can help ease their workload. If you have certain stations or zones within the classroom, have a helper or two be responsible for keeping everything tidy between use. The same goes for simple tasks like pencil sharpening, passing out papers and homework, and helping to keep the classroom running smoothly.

There’s no reason we have to do everything ourselves, and the added responsibility benefits the students.

2. Create an organized system for your desk

If your curriculum relies heavily on worksheets and other papers, make sure you have a folder or drawer system set up to help keep everything straight! Devise a system that best meets your needs and stick to it. A catch-all or junk drawer can also be helpful when you need to put things away but have to come back later to organize them.

3. Consider working with a team

Co-teaching is a great way to get more accomplished each day. When you have another teacher or aide on your team, you can’t help but feel relief. Working with another person is also a great way to overcome procrastination and other bad habits getting in the way of your productivity. Use your teammates to everyone’s advantage, and maintain a productive relationship as you all multitask to ease each member’s burden.

4. Plan in advance, at least one week out

When you set a firm block of time each week to tackle the following week’s planning, you may be amazed by how much more productive you feel. Setting the hard start and stop times for these sessions is another hack that helps you to up your productive output. And, if you are planning with other team members, having a set time that doesn’t change week to week makes it much easier for everyone to plan around the session.

5. Keep a running to-do list

You will be a lot more productive when you have a running to-do list focused on impactful tasks. After each day, reviewing the list and rearranging priorities are important. You know you’re managing your time properly if some less impactful tasks fail.

6. Limit your time on task

If you tell yourself that you can stay late after an unproductive day to catch up, you might fall into the trap of wasting time. Assigning time limits to each task rather than dragging them out into the evening hours is an effective way to maximize your time and spend less of your free time working.

7. Stagger the homework and classwork that you assign

Increasing the amount of work that students do in class and is reviewed on the stop can help to decrease your grading time. Not everything requires an assignment of written homework. Make sure you stagger assignment days for the necessary homework so that you haven’t got stuck grading papers every night or all weekend.
