Being the one teacher who stands out and improves your students’ lives can be extraordinary.

Knowing that our students like spending time with us can give you the boost you need on those cold and miserable Monday mornings, even more so than simply impacting kids’ lives. We were inspired by YouTuber and specialist teacher Michele Rose to put our rose-tinted glasses on and embrace our inner unicorns. After all, we’re in a unique position when it comes to the influence we have over our students’ lives. And who doesn’t love unicorns?

What makes a unicorn teacher?

Many different things can make you your special brand of unicorn teacher. For some educators, it’s all about making things magical for their students. For others, it’s showing true kindness to their class. You might just be embracing your inner unicorn with your students if:

  • Your focus is on providing a magical and exciting learning environment where each day is fun and new
  • Your students know you as someone kind and friendly and more than happy to help others
  • Your class considers you a truly unique teacher
  • You focus on the positives and are optimistic about your students and the world in general

There is more than one way to embrace your inner unicorn as a teacher, but the concept is the same in all cases. Unicorns are supposedly one-of-a-kind, so being a one-of-a-kind teacher is something your students can appreciate. It’s been proven that good teachers can have a lasting impact on students, both as someone to model behavior from and as a person to help them do well on tests and in class. What could be better than a unique teacher in that case?

You want to stand out for all the right reasons as an educator, which means going far beyond the basics required by your school or curriculum. You might not think your students can tell the difference – but they really can. So if you want to be a positive role model to your students and show off that inner unicorn that’s inside every teacher, how can you do that?

Here are a couple of ideas to get you going:

Look for the positives

It’s not always possible, or even appropriate, to always look on the bright side. But even when you’re having a bad day, encouraging your students to see the good in the world can be an excellent way to show off that inner unicorn.

Whether it’s being kind to others, looking at the positives in a book you’re reading, or simply asking students to write something nice about the person sitting next to them, the added effort does make a difference. School isn’t just about tests and textbooks. Bring a little sunshine and sparkle to the classroom, and you’ll be rewarded with happiness and joy from your students in the long term.

Inject some magic into your day

Especially for younger students, the world holds a lot of mystery and magic. While school is a place to learn, it can also be a place where they can expand their imaginations too. Fostering their soft skills is just as important as improving their academic ones. Whether it’s a ‘draw the best dragon’ competition or creating magical costumes from cardboard and paint, making school magical can make an incredible difference in how your students perceive their time in the classroom.
