My students need tablets in order for them to do online Math assignments and other engaging activities to enhance their learning experience in my classroom.

My Students

My students are an amazing diverse group of 6th graders who also happen to come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. I teach 143 students who are not only impoverished but also are below grade level in Math. Ninety percent of my students did not pass their 5th grade state test and some have never passed the state test since third grade. We are a Title One school with limited access to technology. The technology that is on campus cannot be kept in any one classroom because it is used for district online assessments in all three grades levels for Math and Reading on a rotating basis.

My Project

In the education world today, educators are using all types of materials and resources to meet the unique needs of all our students. I have found a wonderful free online program that allows me to assign the day's focus area after it has been taught. Students stay focused on the new concept until they gain initial understanding, then automatically transition to mixed review. The program allows me to deliver individualized, cumulative mixed review to every student, every day. It is designed to complement instruction, not replace it. Opportunities for personal teacher-student interaction are built into the system which allows for student differentiation. Math practice sessions include both new material and review of old concepts. Progress icons keep students motivated to advance their skills, and rewards of games and chat time provide brain breaks. Real-time reporting offers current analytics for timely intervention opportunities from me.

The tablets will be used by the students every day. They will use them daily to complete their assigned math practice sessions. Thirty-two tablets are needed to impact 143 students in six classes. A charging cart will also be purchased in order to keep them charged and ready for use. My goal is that with the use of tablets and the online program I will be able to work with struggling students on Math concepts that they are deficit in, which will help them be successful on the state test in May.
