Years of experience
Students this year
The school I work at is a city public school in Portland, Maine.
An overwhelming 95% of the students in my school live below the poverty line and this year I had 8/22 students who were homeless.
Expecting their families to provide them with school supplies when they can hardly afford to put food on the table is asking too much. For this reason I often stock/replenish the supplies in my classroom out of my own pocket. Most teachers do this and we are happy to because we love our students. With our low salary it becomes challenging throughout the school year.
A donation to my classroom would go directly to providing supplies in my classroom and helping my learners!
How will funding help my students?
I work in a city public school. 95% of my school lives in poverty. I cannot ask them to provide their own school supplies because that is a real burden on these families. So I will often spend money out of my own pocket to replenish school supplies in my classroom and it can get really expensive. The money would go directly to school supplies and my classroom in general!
