I have been teaching in Pomona USD for over 25 years. For most of this time I have been teaching kindergarten. I find this quite rewarding in that you can truly see progress from the beginning to the end of the year from students. Be it academic, fine motor skills or maturity you're sure to see all students progress in at least one, if not all the areas I've mentioned. An added bonus is this is still an age when students enjoy coming to school and are eager to learn. This is what makes it so rewarding to be a Kinder teacher!

“The greatest sign of success for a teacher… is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist.’” –Maria Montessori”

What will the funds be used for

I have finally decided to jump on board the flexible seating movement. If you are unfamiliar with this term, it is a strategy that allows students to choose a way of sitting (or standing) in the classroom to complete independent work. It gives students the opportunity to pick a more comfortable option if they desire, as opposed to traditional desks and chairs. In a classroom which uses flexible seating you may find bean bags, scoop chairs, stools, padded crates, cushions, wobble chairs, carpet mats, pillows, standing desks or a couch or rocking chair or two! These options would be available for students to utilize as well as the traditional desk and chair.

Research has shown that students who are given the choice of how and where to do their work stay more focused, enhances meaningful collaboration among classmates, and keeps students more calm which encourages engagement and in the end, quality work.

Wherein it will be a slightly uncomfortable transition for this veteran teacher :) this change will definitely benefit my students offering them comfort and increase their commitment to learning!
