Interests
After college, I embarked on a ten-year career in public health, during which I educated young people about everything from HIV prevention to sexual violence. I tutored inner-city elementary students, taught a first-year college course, and led workshops for adult professionals. Through a wide variety of experiences, I learned the power of stories. I discovered that reading, writing, and teaching (and continuously learning) were my passions. It was with this late-in-the-game epiphany that I went back to school as a new mom to earn my license to teach English Language Arts in grades 7-12. Now in my seventh year teaching high school students, I value more than anything building relationships with them in order to match them with the books that will help them grow.
How will funding help my students?
It will increase the power of books! I can never have enough books in my classroom. Many of my students work or help at home besides having seven other classes and a sport or musical after-school commitment. They openly admit that the ONLY time during the day that they get to read what they WANT is in my classroom. This funding will provide high-interest, young adult books and accessories to provide a safe, comfortable environment for students to read. With time and space to read, students discover that they're not alone, learn about life experiences that differ from theirs, reduce their stress and anxiety, increase their vocabulary and strengthen their background knowledge and writing ability.
Number of students who will be impacted: 130
