I am a fourth grade teacher in a very small town in Kansas. This is my tenth year of teaching. I have taught 5th, 1st, 4th, 6th and now I am teaching 4th grade again. A wonderful age! I am passionate about teaching life skills, social studies, language arts, I guess I am passionate about teaching all the subjects. I am the only 4th grade teacher in our building. I have taught in a much larger district in Kansas. This is my fifth year teaching in our small town school. I wanted to be a teacher since I was in 3rd grade. I received my BS in elementary education from Kansas State University. I have an emphasis in English as a Second Language. I am a mother of two children - ages 9, 5, and one on the way.

What will the funds be used for
I would like to use these funds to buy flexible seating for ALL my students. In many of my classroom photos, donors may be able to see that my students sit on stability balls instead of traditional chairs. I have used stability balls as seating for six years now. Stability balls are an excellent resource for students. They increase blood flow to the brain, and help with posture. I encourage active seating because, in my experience, students are able to focus on tasks better. They benefit all students, but have had a major impact on former students with ADHD, ADD, and some sensory processing disorders. Before using a stability ball, students must go through a "safety training", have parents sign a permission slip and sign our Stability Ball Agreements. There are strict rules to keep all the students safe with the stability balls.
Along with other daily-used classroom supplies, our stability balls have seen their share of wear and tear. I currently have 10 stability balls for use in my classroom. Students may use them on a rotating schedule (every other day) to ensure that everyone who wants to use them, may have a chance. Some of the balls have been used for six years! Occasionally, families purchase their own for their child to use every day, but not all can afford it.
I am planning to purchase five 65 cm stability balls for my classroom. They cost around $20 each. I would also like to try out/buy six 18 inch wobble stools to use at my small group table. They cost $67 each.
My students and I are BEYOND grateful to anyone who would be generous enough to donate to our goal. These stability balls are a true "hit" in our school. Though they are not allowed to sit on them unless they have been through the training, younger students are truly excited to come to 4th grade and "have a ball"!
