Hello!

My name is Amanda Dohmen and I am a 5th grade teacher in the Salt Lake City area.

Why teaching: I love teaching because of the joy and passion student have in their own learning. Everyday is all about being positive and sharing that positivity with those around us. Giving students a safe place to discover, grow, and ask questions are vital to my classroom environment. Truth be told - flexible seating gives students the power to do all of that. Flexible seating is a great way to create a climate of comfort and belonging. It’s not because “it looks cool” but rather it allows students the learning space THEY feel comfortable. When the classroom is no longer “teacher” centered if allows students the space to feel at peace. When that happens learning can begin.

About me: I am originally from the good state of Minnesota but found my love of the mountains, the desert, and my husband in Utah. Camping, rock climbing, hiking, skiing, hammock-ing, traveling, cooking, reading, and chocolate eating are my jam. I can’t imagine life without being outside, exploring nature. I love to bring that into my classroom environment and just possibly spark an interest to turn off fortnite and maybe go create an actual fort....outside. ??☀️

and then I realized learning was the greatest adventure. -unknown”

What will the funds be used for

With funding, my students will get hands on STEM projects and access to field trips in the Salt Lake area. Through STEM we will have to opportunity to explore more in the Utah Core science standards by creating projects and bringing in members of our community. In technology, it would be incredible to have students grow in their coding skills. Engineering is cultivated through the building, creating, and implementing of projects to fit a need. I would LOVE the opportunity to cultivate a learning fair where the students skills can be shown. Then of course got math, it is often one of the hardest skills for students to master and feel confident it, through math manipulative tools, students would be able to grow and discover their knowledge in math. Creating this type of environment would meet the needs of ALL students from each learning style, cognitive ability, and developmental level. STEM gives students to ability to self discover, the confidence, and grit to try and try again until they succeed.
