Years of experience
Students this year
My name is Alyssa Tyra and I have been teaching for five years. In 2014, I started teaching freshman at a low-income, inner city school. I absolutely loved working there, but in 2016, after receiving a call from a former teacher turned principal, I decided to move back home and teach in my hometown.
For two years at Jones, I taught 7th grade and coached softball and cheer and was a student council sponsor. This last school year, I moved to 8th grade and continued coaching and sponsoring my club. This year, I was honored as the Jones Middle School Teacher of the Year and the Masonic Lodge Teacher of Today. On top of all of my duties, I started a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction this year.
In my classroom, I strive to build authentic relationships with my kids. I am honest, loving, demanding, and their biggest cheerleader. I help them work through life struggles and school struggles. Through my English curriculum, I teach them skills that transfer to situations outside of the classroom.
How will funding help my students?
Funding will help in classroom in so many ways. For starters, it would help put our class novels in their hands. Right now, we have class sets of about 20 books for classes that average 22-24 kids a class. This makes it really hard for kids to take home books to catch up on reading or do homework. Also, this funding would allow for me to bring in more hands on learning activities such as escape rooms, project materials, and guest speakers.
Number of students who will be impacted: 75
