Years of experience
Students this year
I am a Special Educator in Brooklyn, NY currently working in a K-8 school in an 8th Grade Self-Contained 12:1 classroom setting with students with severe special needs. Many are "far below grade level" reading on the 2nd grade and others are "approaching grade level". They have such a broad range of needs that need to be met throughout their day.
Last year I worked in a Consortium Middle and High School. I have taught 9th & 12th grade English, 6th grade Science, and 9th-12th grade Psychology. My task as a "SpEd" is to ensure that children's educational needs are met through equitable means and there are supports are in place.
My prior career, where I worked for 7 years, was a CPS worker, investigating child abuse/neglect. My whole life has been engulfed by the welfare of children but after my son's Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis and implementation of services I knew my skill set would be better used to serve the special needs population,
How will funding help my students?
Because I am a Special Educator, I must ensure that all my student's special education needs are met. This can be in the form of visual aids, color coding, scaffolded work, tangibles, and sensory devices. My students' have a range of needs from Autism and ADHD to speech and learning disabilities.
Number of students who will be impacted: 10
